Overview

The objective of Patience games generally involves manipulating a layout of cards with the goal of sorting them in a specific manner. Patience games can be played competitively, often in a head-to-head race, or cooperatively.

In Patience games, the player deals cards from a shuffled deck onto a tabletop in a prescribed arrangement. The player then attempts to reorder the deck, following certain restrictions, by suit and rank through a series of moves that involve transferring cards from one place to another. Some games allow reshuffling of the deck(s) and/or placing cards into new or "empty" locations. In the most common form of Patience, known as Klondike, the objective is to build four blocks of cards, one for each suit, starting from Ace and ending with King, by taking cards from the layout whenever they appear on the table.

Types of Patience Games

In most patience games, the main objective is to arrange all thirteen cards of each suit in order, forming a "family" from Ace to King. Typically, the Ace serves as the foundation, followed by a Two of the same suit, then a Three, and so on. This process of building is a defining characteristic of these games and technically categorizes them as "Builders". However, in many games, the cards must be assembled in reverse order on a section of the layout known as the "tableau". Once assembled, they can then be built in the correct sequence on the foundations. This intermediate process of assembling in reverse order is called "packing". Games that use this technique are referred to as "Packers". There are also special types of Packers that can be further categorized as:

  • Blockades
  • Planners
  • Spiders

Additionally, patience games can be classified based on the degree to which cards are revealed throughout gameplay. In "open" games, all cards are visible from the start, and players rely on their analytical skills to solve the patience. In "closed" games, cards are drawn from a face-down stock, adding an element of judgment as the sequence of cards remains unknown until they are revealed. Hybrid games fall in between these two categories and are commonly referred to as "half-open" according to Parlett.
